Awesomeness!

I am sooo totally thrilled with myself today.  After taking that break from running, today is my forth day in a row that I've gone out to run.

Monday- 2 Miles
Tuesday- 1.5 Miles
Wednesday- 1.5 Miles
Thursday- 4 Miles

Booyah!  I completed four miles today!!  AND...the important part is since I'm typing this out for everyone to read...I didn't get hit by a stray golf ball running by the golf course AND I didn't get hit by any cars!  Woohoo!  I was more worried about the golf balls than people driving, lol.  There are no brakes on a golf ball...just sayin'!  I've seen some of the people around here play golf...yeah...it's a bit scary.

I'm all giddy today.  It's been a while since I've run that far and I plan to do it tomorrow too!  With my trusty iPod, I plan to jog/sing four more miles.  At my pace (which was about 11 minutes a mile) I burned an estimated 570 calories.  WOOT!

As for the pain I've been having the past few days (my knees are still sore)...it's getting better.  Today I didn't have any pain until the home stretch when I started hauling it back to the house.  I really picked up the speed when I noticed Bryan put the lights up on our porch.  I got excited, lol.  I've started taking a supplement (along with my multivitamin) called TriFlex.  I've only been taking it for a couple of days (religiously), but I do believe it's helping.  The idea of the supplement is to provide some cushion to your joints and improve mobility.  Well that's pretty much my whole problem...my knee joints.  So, since this is working for me so far I'll keep using it!  If you're interested, I got it at GNC.

Happy Running!!

Holiday Wrap Up

Thanksgiving went off wonderfully!  I did forget the rolls...which are STILL in my freezer...but no one seemed to miss them at all.  The girls put up the tree and I rearranged it just a bit.  I need one more pack of beads to string around it and it'll be complete.  The girls put 4 different kinds of candy canes on it.  I predict in less than two weeks time EVERY...SINGLE...CANDY CANE...will be gone.  Kaelyn is a candy fiend.  Well...a food fiend period actually.  We all know the way to her heart, lol.

The rest of the decorations are coming along nicely.  We got out the beautiful handmade wooden decorations Bryan's grandfather and grandmother gave us last year.  I'm still deciding where to put them so they won't get broken.  I think I want Rudolph next to my desk.  He's so cute!  I'll have to post pictures of them.  They really are lovely. (Update: Rudolph IS next to my desk.  The Christmas tree and the Nutcracker are on the counter.)

I don't think the stockings are ever going to get hung up.  I keep forgetting the stinking Command Strips to hang them with!  Still can't believe we have six stockings to hang this year.  (I finally remembered the Command Strips, lol.)  I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to put in Melody's either. I might get her some cute little teether toys.  OH!!  She's getting her first two bottom teeth in the front.  They're finally breaking through the skin.  So take this as a warning...do NOT stick your fingers in her mouth.  It will only end in pain!  My mom found that out the hard way on Thanksgiving.  Of course, if it wasn't for her letting Mel chew on her fingers we'd not have known she was finally cutting those teeth.

So...today was the first day back to running after spraining my knee on the Heritage Trail run.  I did 2 miles this morning.  My knees didn't like it at ALL!  OMG!  I was going great for probably the first mile and a half.  Then I had to stop to tie my shoe...stupid shoe lace...When I got back up to run again my knees were starting to ache.  I made sure to take my medicine this morning before I left the house because I anticipated something like this happening.  Knowing my knees and their history... By the time I got back to the house I was pretty sore.  I'm not going to let that stop me though.  I'm working on testing what the doctor told me the last time I was there.  He noticed that in the time between my last two visits I had lost six pounds.  He explained to me...and I'm passing it on because it's really important for people to know...for every pound of weight that you carry on your body, your joints are feeling 4-6 pounds of pressure.  He said on average every pound of weight that you lose takes 5 pounds of pressure off of your joints.  So for me, I've taken about 225 pounds of pressure off of my joints!  He doesn't think I need any surgery yet, just to keep doing what I'm doing.  If it starts to get too painful I'm supposed to do more low impact cardio (like bike riding).  I wanna see how my knees feel after taking off another 10 pounds.  That's 50 pounds of pressure.

So here's to starting the week off right!  (Raises my bottle of gatorade!)  Let's see if I can keep it up.

Catch up

Potomac Heritage Trail 50K

So...I realize that I haven't posted anything since at least last week.  Bryan and I signed up to do the Potomac Heritage Trail 50k Run/Hike.  They should have put CLIMB in there too...and for me...trip, fall, sprain your knee...Yeah, that's what happened.  I didn't make it all the way through the 31 miles, but I did get 15 under my belt before Bryan told me I wasn't doing anymore.  By the time it got to that point, he was helping me down all of the hills because putting pressure on my knees going down was agonizing.  I'm not stressing it for sympathy or to spice up the post...it really was agonizing pain.  When we got home I assessed my injuries.  A bruise was starting on the inside of my left knee, scrape on my right knee, scratches on my right thigh, scrapes on my hands, knees throbbing.  Even my hips were sore, but that's because they'd never done more than 6.5 miles before.  The next day when I got up it was worse!  The bruise on my left knee was hideous and there were bruises speckling down my right leg.  I didn't even see those when I did my original assessment.

My knees were hurting so bad that I decided to make an appointment with the doctor.  Bryan took me to see him and let me just say...I wouldn't have walked out of the office if he hadn't.  I know the doctor was doing his job and all...bending my knees here and there and in and out and all over the place...but seriously, I could barely walk back to the car.  I had to lean on Bryan to ease the pressure off of my knees.  They hurt worse when I left than when I went in!  I sprained the ligament on the outside of my left knee.  FUN!  They made me go get xrays too.  That wasn't fun.  I'm just grateful the doctor gave me some pain medication.  I might have broken down and started crying in his office if he told me to deal with it, lol.  I'm a wimp.

Anyway...not to make the run out to be something completely horrible...because it wasn't horrible at all.  I'm just clumsy.  The trail was fun.  Climbing the rocks was fun...dangerous, but fun!  The river was beautiful.  The weather was beautiful.  The lack of kids fighting was BEAUTIFUL!  Bryan and I hardly ever get time out to ourselves so we really enjoyed just listening to the sounds around us.  And not ONE of those was a kid arguing!  It was great!  I would so totally do it again!  And I plan to do it again next year with Bryan.  I just have to work on watching where I am going so I don't trip over tree roots, lol.  I made it half way through the trail and I was going fine...the only thing that held me back from completing was falling and hurting myself.

So...who wants to see pictures?  I mean...those who haven't already seen them on my Facebook.

As You Can See...

I've combined my 2 top blogs.  I think it'll be easier for me this way.  So anyway...

We took down our Halloween decorations yesterday and put them away.  We started checking our Christmas stuff to see if it worked.  We are super excited about Christmas this year!  We were stationed in England for the last three (3) Christmas holidays so we weren't able to use our lights.  The whole 110 vs. 240 volts thing.  Basically, out lights don't fit in their sockets unless we used a transformer for every little thing.  We were only allotted three (3) of them so we had to use them where they were needed...the computers for one, lol.  The tree took up another one during the season, but we'd have to share that one with the vacuum.  This year we get to use our lights however we please!  I'm not sure who's more excited...Bryan or the kids, lol.  I've already picked out where I'm putting my tree, but I have to move Natalie's school table and computer.  She's not going to be particularly thrilled about that.  We're pretty much already done our shopping for the holiday too.  The rest of the stuff we're doing is being made by us.

Yesterday I ran my 1.5 in 13.15!!  I'm thrilled about this because I did it by myself.  I didn't run with Bryan yesterday.  I ran by myself with my iPod.  I think today I'll ride a bike for an hour and read a book.  I seriously hope they changed out the bikes in the family room.  I liked the one that was in there before.  The one that's in there now hurts my tush, lol.  I also need to do my pushups and situps today too.

Stay tuned for my Thanksgiving Menu!

The Time Has Come...

For me to get a new pair of running shoes.  :(  *Sniffle*  I liked my shoes.

You're supposed to get a new pair of shoes every 400-500 miles or at least that's the mileage I set for myself.  I haven't run even close to that much, but I didn't get these in the right size for running either.  You're supposed to buy your shoes (if you're planning to run in them) a half size bigger than your normal size to allow for swelling while running.  Mine are still in one piece (and still look new because of the colors I chose) which is great because I can wear them everyday if I want to switch up from my Reeboks.  I need to change them because I need a half a size bigger and a shoe that will support my feet better.  Right now I'm having a lot of problems keeping motivated while running because the back of my legs start hurting.  It's not my whole calf muscle though...just the bottom of it, right above my ankle.  Today after we got back from the gym it actually caused my foot to hurt when I was walking up the stairs.  That sucks!

On a brighter note!

I realized something the other day.  When I first started running with Bryan, I ran the PT test in 18+ minutes, which means I would have failed.  Oh well...I knew I was out of shape.  It was the point of starting to run!  That and to enjoy doing something with my husband that he loves.  When we ran Wednesday I did it in 13:57 and then again in 12:41.  So basically, I've managed to cut 5 minutes off of my run time!  That's extremely exciting.

I've also come to find that running on the road is so much better for me personally.  It does tend to weigh more on my asthma, but that's why I have meds!  I believe all of the good far outweighs one little obstacle.
  • The scenery changes outside.  Let's face it...running on a treadmill can get very boring.  I have to use an iPod or watch tv or I just won't be able to get my mind off of not actually going anywhere.
  • You're propelling yourself (not being shoved along by a treadmill).  Better for your legs I believe.
  • My stride lengthens.   This is great.  I use up less energy when I can stretch out my legs more.
  • I don't feel boxed in.  It keeps me from being able to lengthen my stride.  Plus when you're boxed in you feel like if you make a mistake you'll end up on your face and then on the floor when you've been tossed right off of the machine!  Can't get tossed off of the road!
  • A lot of times you are running faster and don't realize it.  I know I felt like I was running slower outside...especially the second time around the block Wednesday.
Anyway...that's about all I have to say.  I've got to start shopping around for a new pair of running shoes.  I may go to this store in Annapolis that custom fits your feet and runs tests to get you the right pair of shoes the first time.

Oh...before I go.  I'm thinking about just combining my two blogs together.  Might copy and paste the previous ones from "She Says" and start writing everything in this blog and change the name.  Good idea or bad idea?  It's hard to keep up with 4 kids and 2 blogs.  Thought it might be easier if I combined them and labeled my posts carefully.

She's on FIRE!!!

Woo woo!

I ran for the first time today with Bryan in like 3 weeks.  We did 2 1.5 mile laps around the block.  My sister watched the kids for us so we could go.

Lap 1- 13:57

That in itself is pretty exciting.  I passed the Air Force PT test!

Lap 2- 12:41

WHAT?!  I honestly thought I did the second lap slower than I did the first one.  I guess it was because my body was feeling looser and I could breathe pretty well.  It felt great.

On a side note...I am soooo sore, lol.  My legs are feeling what I did with my sister the other night.  Jillian whooped us.  I haven't done a whole lot else so far this week.  My sister has been here to visit, so I'm trying to spend time with her.  We're enjoying ourselves :D

UPDATE:  I found out that I didn't just pass the Air Force PT standards for running.  I passed the PLS (Presidential Maintenance) standards as well!!

I'm back!

It's been a little while since i last posted anything.  A lot has been happening around here and it's been throwing me off just a bit.  My husband's schedule has been all messed up, which in turn is messing mine up.  Last night, I was awake until 4am.  Ridiculous right?!  It's awful.  What's worse is that Bryan wasn't working.  I've been staying up so late because he does work a lot of nights and I don't fall asleep easily when he's not home.  Don't "awwwww" me...I don't wanna hear it!  I wanna sleep!!  I admit that last night was the latest that I've stayed up.  The only plus side is that I finished my book!  It's called The Killing Dance by Laurell K. Hamilton.  It's book 6 in a 19 or 20 book series.  I'm not sure about the last book yet.  It's still an Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novel, but it isn't listed on the others as part of the series.
Dabel Brothers/Marvel Comics depiction of Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter
BUT! That doesn't really have anything to do with my exercise blog...

I went to the doctor recently to get myself updated on my breathing medication and other things.  I explained to him that I was doing a lot of exercise and running and what symptoms I was suffering from.  Doctor put me on steroids...blah!  So on top of the vitamins (oh! I finally did pick out my multi-horsepill...I mean vitamin...) and the other stuff I have to take, now I'm puffing an inhaler twice a day.  Yippy.  As if I don't have enough to remember.  I do have to say I'm glad the doctor prescribed it.  When I went to take my breathing test they said my inhale and exhale rate was over 100% for my height/weight.  Woo!

Running indoors is still fairly easy although, I haven't done any running in the last week or two.  My knees are bothering me pretty bad, so I've switched to low impact cardio for a while.  That includes bike riding and walking uphill.  I've also been doing some stair climbing.  I have a harder time with my chest closing up climbing stairs than I do running.  I'm not really sure why, but I do.

Bryan's got me doing a couple of challenges with him.  One is the 100 pushup challenge and the other is the 200 situp challenge.  Yeah...it's crazy.  Here are the links.

So far I'm up to doing day 2 of the 2nd week, third row.

Same thing for this too.

Today...

I did a fat burn walk on the treadmill for 60 minutes.  I also did the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred with my sister.  I really applaud her effort.  Although there was a lot of giggling and joke making going on...she did the whole workout and put everything she had into it.  She's doing great and I'm glad she considers me a great supporter to her.

A Love Story Like No Other

People love to use my story as an example.  It amazes them I guess.  It's funny.  Is it really that hard to believe you don't necessarily have to date someone to know they're right for you?  Okay, I'll admit it's a little odd.  Kinda Cinderella-ish!  She didn't date her prince before she married him!  Just danced with him at the ball!  But, here we are nearly seven years later still going strong with four beautiful little girls.  Wanna read the story?  Okay, here it goes...

Bryan and I have known each other since 1998, but we never dated.  Never...not ever.  He was attached to a friend of mine and I was attached to way too many guys for me to remember...or even want to remember for that matter.  Anyway...it wasn't until after I had spent my first college semester at my dad's house in Mississippi and moved back to Maryland that we ran into each other again.  I found out while I was in MS tutoring mom over the phone with her algebra wasn't working (insert me beating my head against the desk) so she found someone else to help her...care to guess who?  Yep...Bryan was her tutor.  So let me lay out that night for you...

My sister and I were sitting at the table in the kitchen just goofing off.  That's pretty much all we ever did...and still do, lol.  I love my sister!  She brings so much energy and fun to my day.  Bryan walked in the back door (because knocking is seriously overrated at my mother's...we always had people coming and going) and asked if mom was home because he wanted to say bye to her before he left for basic training (it was the first time I had heard he was joining the military).  I told him she was at work, but we were going bowling that night and invited him to come too.  Bryan agreed to go after we told him what a hoot it was going to be.  If you've never been bowling with my family...we have to be the most hilarious group you'd ever see.  You have my mom...the self proclaimed professional bowler (or so she thinks, lol...love you mom!), my sister Jessica...well let's just put it this way...my five year old, Natalie, bowls better than she does.  It's okay though!  You can't be skilled at everything, right?!  There's David, my step dad...I suppose he was about average, my 2 younger (but now MUCH bigger) step brothers that liked to show off, my then 8 year old velcro step sister...she attached herself to everyone, and myself.  I wasn't the best bowler, but I could hold my own.

So...Bryan came back later that night before we left and I rode with him to the bowling alley.  We just talked, joked around, and flipped through the radio stations.  Apparently at the time, I was extremely dense...because he was flirting with me the entire night and it went straight over my head.  Not that it was hard, I'm only 5' 3 (3/4)"...everything goes over my head, HA!  But seriously...how could I have missed it?!  He did everything short of kissing me!  We bowled for a while and then shot pool for a while and then went back to the house to chill for a few hours.  The ol' fuddy duddy parents went to bed early, so the kids were all left in the kitchen playing UNO attack.  Bryan decided to stay for a while and hang out with us.  We were all up laughing and cutting up until about 3am when he finally decided it was a good idea to go home.  Did I mention he was supposed to be getting on a plane at 6am to leave for basic training??  Yeah...he was literally at my house until it was time for him to leave.  Seeings I missed all the other hints, you would have thought I'd catch that one...but alas...it went over my head like everything else.  My mom informed me later that morning about what I was too blind to see for myself...and I felt like an idiot!  A giggly one...

I didn't hear from Bryan again until he came home from basic.  When I came home from work his car was in the driveway.  At first I had no idea who's car it was, but when I walked in the front door I figured it out fast!  He was sitting on the couch talking with my grandma.  This was pretty significant to me.  My grandma was amazing.  She was THE BEST judge of character and if she didn't like someone she wasn't afraid to let them know.  Believe me!  She didn't like a couple of my boyfriends, way back when, and literally ran them out of the house with either a baseball bat or her broom, lol.  No joke!  It was a site to see.  At the time he was there, she was talking his ears off.  About what...I have no idea, but that didn't matter.  She liked him and that was a big deal to me.

It was like that everyday for the whole week.  Bryan would be at the house when I got home from work talking with my grandma and waiting for me to get there.  We never went anywhere or did anything.  Just sat around talking with her and my cousin Tiffany.  He'd let me lay there with my feet in his lap and fall asleep.  At the end of the week he had to leave for his first duty station (his first base).  I gave him my address so he could write me and my number so he could call and he gave me a kiss on my forehead.  I didn't find out until right before we were married that he wrote me letters in basic/tech school.  He was too chicken to send them.  Imagine that...Bryan chicken...HA!  Who would have thought!  Anyway...we stayed in touch while he was gone.  First we'd talk once or twice a week.  Then it became an every night ritual.  I'd go over to my mother's at a certain time to talk to him on the computer or he'd call her cell.  We'd talk about anything and everything or sometimes nothing at all.  Then one day...out of the blue while we were talking on the computer he asked me to marry him.  At first I wasn't sure if he was being serious...or if I was reading the message right for that matter.  I had my little brother read it back to me, lol.  Sure enough!  It was the same the second time!  I didn't need time to think about it.  I knew in my heart that I was head over heals in love and wanted to marry him.  I was even willing to move away from home...to the frozen tundra that is North Dakota with him.  But asking once wasn't enough for him.  He asked me again on the phone a few nights after that.  I guess he wanted to give me some time to think about it even after I had already said yes.

He realized I was as serious as he was, so we started talking about a wedding.  Then after looking over a lot of magazines and such...we decided not to have a wedding.  We decided to get married at the courthouse and save the little bit of money we had to furnish a house.  So he set a date to take leave and fly back home.  Of course, he could have picked a better time of year...the roads were awful with slush and such the night we went to the airport to pick him up.  We being Bryan's dad, his sister (very pregnant at the time) and myself.

My stomach was in knots the entire ride there.  When we parked the car I had to jump out because I felt a little queezy.  Not from the driving, but because I was excited and nervous about seeing him again.  The cold air helped to calm me down.  Then we rode the bus over to the terminal and the butterflies started all over again.  When we got down to the baggage area I was half dying.  His sister spotted him first.  I promise you have never seen a pregnant girl run so fast, lol.  She was excited to see him too.  Me, I still remember to this day what he came home in and exactly what he looked like that night!  I let his family get their hugs out of the way first...figured I was going to be glued to him for the ride home anyway.  And I was, lol.  Snuggled as close as I could get!

Bryan was home for probably 3-4 days when he broke out the ring and officially asked me to marry him.  And I do mean official...down on his knees and choking on his words.  It was the sweetest thing ever.  I cried.  I said yes of course, but I cried.  We went that afternoon to the courthouse to get our license and a few days later we got married.

So there you have it!  I think it's a sweet little story.  Of course...it is MY story, lol.
